. . . Rape!

On my way to my place of work today, while I was listening to the news on the radio, I heard a VERY disturbing story about an undergraduate in Abia State University (ABSU) who was raped by a gang of 5 boys (also undergraduates in the same ABSU). I was even more angry when I heard that this ugly incident occurred ONE MONTH AGO!!! What?! In the course of discussing this issue, Hubby and I agreed that the rapists should not be spared as soon as they are fished out!

While I was blog surfing, I read about this rape issue on Naijalines, and subsequently on Linda Ikeji's blog. My ANGER can only be imagined! I was so ANGRY!! I was so ANGRY that I said "if I were that girl, I would personally KILL those boys (ANIMALS). WHAT??? These boys are NOT worthy of been classified as humans.

I do not care whatever prompted the bestial act! NO HUMAN BEING DESERVES TO BE TREATED IN SUCH A WAY! These so called rapists are sons to a WOMAN! They are brothers to some SISTERS! They are Uncles to some NIECES! To think that every rapist out there is a "potential" father is even more worrisome! What example would such a person pass on to his lineage?

I think it is about time that EVERYONE joins this fight against rape! The sooner our society change its orientation and views about rape, the better for all of us. Imagine a rape victim who ran to the "police" to make a report and the STUPID police officer asks "wetin you do wey make am rape you" (what did you do to make him rape you?) How can such a girl feel protected by the police??

I was told of a rape victim who ran to the student union of her institution for refuge. When the student union officials stepped into the matter, the rapists were beaten so badly and thereafter handed over to the school senate. After investigation, the boys were EXPELLED from the school and handed over to the police. Believe it or not, I was further informed that the rapists begged the victim who was now "feeling sorry" for the rapists!! Can you beat that?

In the instant case, the school even had the boldness to say the victim and the so called rapists are not students in the school? This is very disheartening to say the least!

If rapists are not adequately punished, they would go about committing this crime with the "assurance" that nothing would happen to them. If this crime continues unchecked, it could happen to someone we know.

I am a Mother. I am a Sister. I am an Aunty. I have loads of female relatives. The question I am asking myself now is - "how would I feel if this sort of thing were to happen to a relation?"

LET'S SPEAK OUT AGAINST RAPE AND INJUSTICE!
